The book is unmarked and free of usage indications.
"For the half-century between 1820 and 1870, provisioning of whaleships dominated the economy of Hawai'i. It was a time of profound and irrevocable change, as the highly structured and sophisticated Hawaiian society struggled to adapt to the dual effect of Calvinist New England missionaries and thousands of whalers seeking periodic haven in the Islands from their increasingly rapacious endeavor, hunting the Leviathan in Pacific waters."
New standards were set for mores and business in the Islands. Companies still viable today began during the time of the whalers, among them C. Brewer, H. Hackfeld (now Amfac), Castle & Cook and Theo H. Davies. The influence of an older and more natural-resource-oriented way of life waned. This book's close-up look at an extraordinary era in Island history leaves no doubt that this first extended encounter with Western civilization had a powerful impact, one from which it is still recovering. - Jody Parry Belknap § Lahaina Whaling Museum
Author MacKinnon Simpson with Photographer Robert B. Goodman and Rick Ralston of the Lahaina Whaling Museum have compiled an extraordinary and likely the most complete commemorate thus far of this historical and brutal portion of Pacific history. WHALE SONG, of impressive size and quality has been configured to be both an educational tool and a pictorial presentation of whaling history that includes many of the original artifacts and testimonials of the life of a whaler.
A wonderful historical presentation, WHALE SONG would be an excellent addition to an Island collection. USPS Priority Mail Delivery well packed to prevent shipping damage, International shipping via Air at cost. (Please anticipate considerably higher shipping costs for foreign destinations) Stamdard GE tax applicable on sales to all residents of the State of Hawaii.
