Description
Colman, Samuel. NATURE'S HARMONIC UNITY: A TREATISE ON ITS RELATION TO PROPORTIONAL FORM. Edited by C. Arthur Coan, LL.B.Illustrated with 302 illustrations by the author and mathematical analysis by the editor
. New York and London: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1920.
First edition thus
. Square octavo.
Remarkably SCARCE treatise on the laws governing proportional form in both nature and the arts and sciences, this well-illustrated volume amply demonstrates how a design's geometrical construction can captivate both the eye and the mind - flowers, shells, and other natural organisms appear here, along with artistic creations, in a mathematical study of the similarity of their constructive principles; these principles, in turn, are the fundamental elements by which nature creates harmony
. Samuel Colman (1832-1920), was a prominent member of the Hudson River School of painters, was also a teacher and associate of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Bound in the publisher's green cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titles and decorations. The contents are lightly toned. Small red ink stamp to the rear pastedown. Previous owner's ink signature to the verso of the front flyleaf. The boards are somewhat worn, with some chipping and loss of cloth to the spine ends and a tear along the front gutter.
Notably SCARCE and VERY INFLUENCIAL WORK
