Description
Up for auction is an interesting set with a fascinating provenance, and unique bookplates. The title of the volumes :Lettres Edifiantes et Curieuses, Écrites Des Missions Étrangères.
Nouvelle Édition Le Gobien, Charles (ed.) et al. Published by J.G. Merigot, Paris, 1780. In total
five stray volumes only from a much larger 26 volume set.
The author of this extensive work was
Charles Le Gobien (1653 – 5 March 1708) He was a French Jesuit writer, founder of the Lettres édifiantes et curieuses a collection of reports from Jesuit missionaries in China.
It is a major source of information for the history of Catholic missions and life in China in those times.

As I mentioned the provenance is quite interesting. All volumes contain the armorial bookplates of
Leonard Horne
r, and
Charles James Fox Bunbury.
Leonard Horner : “ FRSE FRS FGS (17 January 1785 – 5 March 1864) was a Scottish merchant, geologist and educational reformer
. He was the younger brother of Francis Horner. Horner was a founder of the School of Arts of Edinburgh, now Heriot-Watt University and one of the founders of the Edinburgh Academy. A 'radical educational reformer' he was involved in the establishment of University College School.
As a commissioner on the Royal Commission on the Employment of Children in Factories, Horner arguably did more to improve the working conditions of women and children in North England than any other person in the 19th century.”
“Sir Charles James Fox Bunbury, 8th Baronet, FRS (4 February 1809 – 18 June 1886) was an English naturalist.
He was born in Messina, the eldest son of Sir Henry Bunbury, 7th Baronet and Louisa Amelia Fox and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He married Frances Joanna Horner, daughter of Leonard Horner, on 31 May 1844 in London. They had no children.
He was a Justice of the Peace and deputy lieutenant for Suffolk and in 1868 was appointed High Sheriff of Suffolk. He was a keen botanist and geologist with a particular interest in paleobotany. He collected plant specimens on expeditions to South America in 1833 and South Africa in 1838. He also accompanied his great friend Sir Charles Lyell, the geologist, on an expedition to Madeira.
He was elected a Fellow of the
Royal Society in 1851.
He died at Barton Hall, Bury, Suffolk in 1886 and was succeeded in his title by his younger brother Sir Edward Herbert Bunbury, 9th Baronet. “
Condition : Good - Bound in full leather gold gilt titles decorations small vol “ 4 x 7”. Leather rubbed, spines dry some chipping, scuffed, bumped corners hinges weak, but holding. Internally slightly age toned some pages very bright and clean very little foxing if any. All volumes appear to be complete. As always any questions feel free to ask.
