Description
Up for auction is a rare volume with fascinating provenance. The title:Hieronymi Dandini Caesenatis e Societate Iesu Ethica sacra hoc est De virtutibus, et vitijs libri quinquaginta, quibus ex Sacrarum Litterarum
: Antverpie, Prostant Apud Viduam Ioannis Baptistae Verdunssen, via vulo Cammerstraet, sub figno duarum, Ciconiarum, Anno M. DC. XCII (1692) Cum Gratia & Privilegio. Volume is written in Latin with beautiful decorations.

Jerome Dandini Caesenatis Ethics International Society of Jesus is about the virtues and vices fifty books, in which the Sacred Scripture.
In addition this volume contains the beautifully executed
17th century bookplate of Andreas Hedio.
“Andreas Hedio, the son of the Löbenicht brewer Abraham Hedio
and his wife Dorothea, daughter of the electoral baker Erhard Kretschmer, had attended school in Löbenicht in the first years of his life. In 1657 he enrolled at the University of Königsberg. He continued his studies at the University of Jena , where he obtained the
academic degree of Master of Philosophy in 1663.
In 1667 he became
professor of logic and at the University of Königsberg
, 1669 chief inspector of the alumni and in
1694 librarian of the Königsberg university library in the castle.
He had also given lectures on the new science of physics.
He himself had built up an extensive private collection of rifles and collected mathematical instruments, natural objects and coins.
His book collection was sold and the remaining collections were brought to the university.
He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Königsberg University and was rector of the Alma Mater in the summer semesters of 1684, 1692 and 1700 .’”
Condition : Good - VG: Bound large folio ” 9 x 12 “ bound in vellum. Cover shows scuff marks bumped corners. Internally very good and complete with 674 pp plus index & preface and blue fore edge coloration watermarked end papers. Expect very light age toning and spotting, only 40pp show a slight darker tone else very bright. Title page shows early signatures on title page ex libris from bibliotheque hard to decipher the script but dated 1771, and another dated 1774 both written in Latin. In addition another curiosity was found within the pages of the book.
I discovered within the mid-section of the pages a fragment of manuscript and what appears to be a few human hairs. The manuscript fragment is written in Latin and measures approx 1-2 inches in length. Overall a rare volume with a fascinating provenance. As always any questions feel free to ask.
About the author :
Girolamo Dandini (Latin: Hieronymus Dandinus; 1554–1634
) was an Italian Jesuit and academic. e was born in Cesena. With Juan Maldonado he was the first Jesuit professor in Paris, at the Collège de Clermont; there he taught François de Sales. Later he was professor of theology at Perugia. He was sent in 1596 by Pope Clement VIII as nuncio to Lebanon, to preside at a general Maronite council, for the purpose of introducing certain liturgical reforms. It was held at the Qannubin Monastery. On the way Dandini visited Cyprus; he was accompanied by Fabio Bruno, who had been on an earlier mission in 1580 with Giovanni Battista Eliano.
