    Description

This book has been in my library since the late '60s but it is time for it and most of its brothers to go.  It is a terrific book about a photographer on the frontier late in the 19th century taking picutres of soldiers and Indians from the Southwest and North.    Going through it I found it difficult to pic which pictures to show, so I doubled up on some to show the range and quality in this listing.  The photographer, Christian Barthelmess, had a great eye for pics and was something of an ethnographer as well as his labeling of the photos show.
The book is a first edition from the Univ or Ok press in 1965 and I had it covered in library type mylar plastic some years ago, but there was already some good shelfware on the dust jacket.  The book itself is in VG condition, 151 pp, tons of photos.
For cavalry buffs, see the pics after page 40 for the one with two cavalry troopers in their field camp with shelter.  You could not get a better image of troopers in the field and their equipment in the late Indian Wars than this image.  I enlarged it some for detail, but I would have loved to see a large print from the original negative for more detail.  One saddle is hanging over the line holding up the shelter halves, the other is still on the horse with the carbine in the socket.  Wow!
