the 1887 view of Mt. Vernon's Public Square, an 1846 drawing of Mt. Vernon, and an 1846 view of Kenyon College.
Among the many and diverse topics covered are:
Early settlers and other "firsts"; disappearing water wells; mink tobacco pouches, doing business with the Indians; Kenyon College and other educational institutions; famous Kenyon alumni, including President Hayes; and student life and discipline.
Genealogy buffs
will find a list of 1888 county officers and businesses, and biographies of Philander Chase, Charles Pettit McIlvaine, Columbus Delano, Gen. George Washington Morgan, Sen. William Windom and Fred Hunt Hurd.
The Howe history covers the development of this area until about 1890, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glimpse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. A 1933 look at the history of newspapers in the county, brief articles on the Old Kenyon Fraternity Lodge and Daniel Decatur Emmett, composer of "Dixie", some newspaper feature stories about WWII Gen. Curtis LeMay, and a grass-roots presidential campaign, and other area subjects from the late 1960s. A map showing the 88 Ohio counties and a map of 1805 Ohio are also included.
