I’m thinking this is some sort of reprint done at a local bindery by someone or other. Once the text begins, each page is actually a folded over leaf. I’ve tried to capture this in a photo. While perfectly readable, the overall effect is to make the book about twice as thick as it needed to be. The photo of the author at the front of the book appears to be photocopied.

The boards have only minor wear.
§
Some chapters have heavy, although quite straight, underlining.
