    Description

This meerschaum pipe dates back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is marked with the five-sided Diane head (with the A for Vienna and the 4 for 750/1000 parts silver) which dates the pipe to 1872. It is also marked with an LF on the rim and D.H. Weiss on the top of the bowl along with the letters "en" indicating the end of a word, which might be Sweden. The initials LF are unknown. The role of D.H. Weiss is also unknown, but he might have been the owner of the pipe. The exterior of the meerschaum is in exceptional condition and the silver cap still latches tightly.  The bowl is heavily caked. The wooden pipe stem itself is in very good condition but the attached gutta percha mouthpiece is chewed through and the woven cover of the spring-loaded flexible portion has come apart. The case and hinges are functional but the latch is not. The line across the bowl in Photo no. 3 is a colored mark, not a crack. An estate item, the provenance is unknown.
