    FIRST EDITION
This volume is one of several biographies which were released during the year of his death, this particular publication is considered one of the better biographies on Grant's life.
But, to quote from the preface:
"Ulysses S. Grant is dead. He, who for more than twenty years has been America's most prominent citizen and the world's most noted man, has passed away amid a nation's tears and a world's profound regrets.
It is, as yet, too soon to fully estimate the man's uncommon worth. The judgements of History cannot be forced. They mature slowly and irrevocably. Points of character and items of conduct may be comprehended, but time alone combines these details into one living whole...."
