A significant and scarce document of 19th century American history, demonstrating the mounting turmoil over tariffs that drew over two hundred delegates from fifteen states to Philadelphia. Recorded in this text are the proceedings which led to
an address and the appointment of a committee to draw up a memorial to Congress. The convention was discussed by Alexis de Tocqueville in Book I of his
Democracy in America
(1835).
Signed on front wrapper by Edward Cruft
(1776 – 1866), a prominent Boston merchant and friend of John Quincy Adams.
Text is complete; tearing to last page, with no loss to text. Some foxing, mostly affecting first and last few leaves.
Measurements: Approximately 9" tall, 5-3/4" wide, 3/8" thick.
