Rabbi (and Marine Corps Lieutenant) Roland B. Gittelsohn (1910-1995), the first Jewish chaplain to serve with the Marine Corps. He was one of approximately 1,500 Jewish Marines who engaged in a 25-day battle for the island that cost the lives of 6,800 Marines. When the fighting was over, Division Chaplain Warren Cuthriell, a Protestant minister, asked Rabbi Gittelsohn to deliver the memorial sermon at a combined non-denominational service dedicating the Marine Cemetery. Some of the Christian chaplains objected, however, to having a rabbi preach over predominantly Christian graves. Others opposed any combined religious service. Cuthriell did not back down, but Gittelsohn decided not to stir the controversy. Instead, three separate religious services were held with the rabbi presiding over the Jewish service. His eulogy was so powerful it was circulated by another chaplain and read into the Congressional Record. He was also a prolific author and pacifist activist.
