Small Folio. 12" x 9.5" inches (LxB). 4" inches thick. Pp. (8), xiii, (1, blank), 426; (4), 490 pages,
complete
with two large folding maps, 52 engraved county maps, all by Thomas Kitchin, 39 engraved town views and 104 in-text engravings. [Brunet II, 984; Upcott I, xxiv].
Two volumes in original fine leather bindings, spines with 5 raised bands & title blindstamped in the 2nd compartments. Rare First edition
Thomas Kitchin (1718-84) was one of the most notable English cartographers of the eighteenth century. He was both an engraver and publisher of considerable reputation who was made Hydrographer to King George III. He worked with many of his contemporaries on various projects. In late October 1763 Robert (1703-64) and James Dodsley announced the publication of the two-volume ''England Illustrated'' utilising 54 maps engraved by Kitchin. Each map was accompanied by descriptive text of the county and engravings by others.
The maps give remarkable detail of major roads, all have a decorative engraved cartouche  ... "by Tho. Kitchin Geographer Engraver to H.R.H. - as stated on the Cartouche's of all 54 maps
The atlas appeared on time being advertised as available on the 1 December 1763.
A total of only 1000 copies were printed.
Rarely found complete as Breakers destroy the books & sell

CONDITION REPORT:
A rare book set in original leather boards, rebacked using fine matching morocco leather, spine with 5 raised bands & the titles  blind-stamped in the 2nd compartment, some wear/tear, scuffing, to covers, spine, ends & corners, pages with some age toning-browning, soiling, are clean & bright (See Scans below), the inner hinges have been strengthened using matching paper, the bindings are tight & intact. The leather is smooth & supple to the touch
.
Note: Board edges are heavily worn [See the last scan below].
Note: The foldout maps of England & Wales each with a small split at 1 fold.
Previous owners ink signature on the top margins of the title pages & another ink inscription on the inner margin of volume 2.
Westminster Library stamp on the title pages are the only Lib. marks
