    Description

Up for bids is a 1904 1st Edition of the book "Drinks As They Are Mixed". It is a fairly scarce/rare book containing upwards of 300 cocktail recipes from pre-prohibition, including fancy cocktails and choice recipes for bottling. It also includes toasts to give/quote, tips for use/storage of spirits, bar cleaning supplies needed, cleaning tips, and more. Basically if you wanted to open a turn of the 20th century bar this would be your guide. There are more rare versions I've seen that are leather bound, but I believe the one you are looking at/reading about now is even more scarce. It was specifically made for Arthur Lehmann & Co Distillers who only operated from 1902-1919 when they saw the inevitably of prohibition on the horizon. With that being in mind they sold their business to Hiram Walker. While reading about Lehmann I did find out they would hand out advertising items, but only to owners/managers of the business they were trying to provide. I looked fairly hard for another item tied to this distillery for sale currently, but came up empty handed. The front cover reads "Drinks As They Are Mixed" at the top and "Compliments of Arthur Lehmann & Co. Distillers Detroit, Mich.-Peoria, ILL". It also features a different illustration on the front cover than the others I've seen. The back cover reads "Distillers Of Richland Kentucky Bourbon And Jersey Rye. I believe the regular versions have a blank back cover. It also contains an advertisement page towards the back featuring G.F. Heublein & Bro. Obviously it is pre-owned, but in good shape considering what it has been around in its time. It is complete without any missing or loose pages. The cloth covers do have a couple dark/soiled areas along with some wear to the corners and edges. There is some writing on the interior cover, pages 132/33, and 135. There are some small tears and folds to the pages along with water marks, but nothing is missing and everything is legible. The spine/binding is slightly loose from use, but I flipped through every page without issue. It measures 5¾"x2¾". Overall it would make a great addition to multiple different collecting categories including books, pre-prohibition items, rare spirits, mixology, and more.
