Description
Up for auction is a rather unusual group of letters written by an American couple who traveled toGermany circa 1925
. I believe their names are
Hans and Demi Pause.
What makes their letters really stand out is they have family living in Germany. This in my opinion makes for a more interesting travel narrative. That being said some entries read more like a diary at times. For instance their description of what life was like in
Weimar Germany
is superb.
In addition their family was quite wealthy and had family connections within Germany. Many relatives still lived in Germany. The families surname is Pause they lived in New Jersey in the United States. The relatives they visited lived in
Dresden, Berlin
and
Frankfort Germany
. The letters also mention Paris, Glasgow, Amsterdam. That being said a good portion of the content covers Germany.
They seemed fairly wealthy for they flew from London to Amsterdam. Even though their relatives in Germany were wealthy they went though turbulent times in Germany after WW I. Reading the letters about the family is like reading an Agatha Christie Novel. One lengthy letter is full of intrigue and gossip.
For example the murder of a household servant, attempted suicide prison and relatives on the run from the law. A brief excerpt from a letter :
“ Conrad was the consul to Buenos Aries during the years after the war but is now in prison in Dresden on the charge of embezzlement and forgery. We did not see him ! “
There is so much more I am sure I missed something. See my brief excerpts from select letters below for more details. I have to say even though this group consists of only six letters they are all quite lengthy and written on very large paper sheets. Four letters is written on S.S. Majestic letterhead one of these letters contains details about life onboard the “Majestic.”
Condition : Very Good- No major issues other than minor age toning. I. As always any questions feel free to ask.
Berlin Germany, August 11, 1925
Berlin is marvelous, attractively cheap and we like the style and manner of people here. It reminds us so much of New York. Berlin is the center of Europe’s high life to see so far. We may have change our minds when we hit Paris. But It is more attractive than London Amsterdam, or Glasgow! When we get to Dresden Hans and I go alone the boys will meet is in Frankfort) We will visit only Taude Linda Hans, and Ella.
Our rooms are “ high” and attractive High - we are on the fourth floor but have charming private elevator for our convenience. The price with breakfast is 3M.50 a day ( about 80-90 cents) the attraction is a crazy man who yells and curses ( in German ) at all hours of the night. At first I thought an exciting murder was going on but our Fraaulein said he is a ? And Ellas at his wife. We miss his nocturnal serenades and cannot sleep until until he begins. On return we yell back at him in English and the house sounds like bedlam.
On Sunday night we had a sumptuous supper at Sohone's Uncle’s house delicious rich herring salad wurst and ice cream. After supper the Zhaps all lit a cigarette offered by our host. Suddenly Bob’s head dropped to the table and he was unconscious. Hans and Sohmer tuned yellowish green and had to be assisted to the balcony for air. Imagine if while on the street car all 3 had fainted away. I would have become hysterical. We finally revived the 3 and reached home safely. That night however I slept on a couch in their room and after giving them each a couple of pills watched over them. Our maniac was not out that even before that night and we four received the terrible things we had heard or read about that crazy people do. We rather expected him to climb over to our balcony and cut our throats !
Goslan Hanz Mts. July 28, 1925
We went last night to the movies and saw another American film. It did us good to see some good dressed people. Here everybody is about 5 years behind in style. I can’t see where Germany ( as you said when you came back) was ahead of America in style. The men wear tight fitting Lsichenbockers. And the women have no” bobbly heads” as the Germans say.
Paris France Aug 23, 1925
Bob on Friday the fourteenth and reached Dresden at noon. We first went to see Taute Lina. We were surprised at her youth and veracity. We were very entertained praised her beautiful tapestry. She narrated Aunt Annes death in detail and than ? Results. She said der Lieke- Gott will pay us back three fold and she will lend mother her silverware - she claims she has already put this in her Will( but she is such a smooth speaking old thing !) She narrated the scandal of the Woeler family. Willie committed suicide because of his large debts. Katie was robbed of all her things( including those stolen from Taute Fleck) and her servant murdered when she was attending the funeral of her father.Conrad was the consul to Buenos Aries during the years after the war but is now in prison in Dresden on the charge of embezzlement and forgery. We did not see him !
Hans skipped to America because of bad debts he owes the man who lives with Taute 40,000 Marks ( This may be partly true)The paper company is now only allowed to buy paper daily in accordance with the previous days bank receipts. It has no trust fund.Taute says that Selma’s money didn’t do any good in this world. Aunt Anne's ( Atlanta) money is still in the hands of the court- and she doubts whether the Atlanta Pauses will even get a cent. She seems to be quite angry towards this set but one can hardly take her word for anything. She contradicts herself so often. She narrated also the Baron Pause story and one can see that she would love to be a “ Von Pause” again. She does carry her nose a bit high. We caught a train out to zauberwald and found the old homestead after passing Uncle Anton’s house. Only Ella was at home - Hans had gone to Leisic.
