Flambe glaze, termed Sang de Boeuf, is a rich and glossy blood red glaze produced by a method that incorporates copper oxide as a coloring agent and firing in a reducing atmosphere, a method first discovered during the Ming dynasty (1368 - 1644). The technique was perfected during the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911), and particularly so during the reign of K'ang Hsi (or Kangxi), when some of the finest pieces of sang de boeuf were created.
