Description
You're bidding on "The Holy Bible", published 1872 by William H. Harding, Philadelphia. "Containing the Old and New Testaments, translated out of the original tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared and revised; together with marginal references, Apocrypha, Concordance and Psalms. The text conformable to the Oxford Edition, and the American Bible Society's Edition of 1816."Book is a large, Victorian period family-style Bible - 9 1/2 " X 11 3/4" format, 3" thick and almost 9 lbs. Leather-bound, with stamped period board design, gilt titling on spine and gilt page edges. Decorative title pages for both Testaments with color lithograph illustrations, an illustrated Bible dictionary at front, and full-plate illustrations throughout featuring the work of legendary illustrator Gustave Dore. Four pages of family record with gilt highlighted design.
Of particular interest, there a genealogy section that has been extensively completed. There's an ownership inscription in the front of the book, "Mary M. Gower from her Husband, John Gower, Apr. 2nd 1878." Five generations of the family appear to be represented, with entries into the 1970s. Family appears to have settled in Maine, and then spread out into New England and New York beginning in the 1930s-1940s.
Note, boards do exhibit some scratch/scuff, but still nice external appeal. Internally, condition is very good, with no hinge cracking, solid binding, and pages generally clean with some occasional mild foxing/discoloration.
Please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal, and don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding - thanks for looking!
