    Description

    ANCIENT TAHITI

    Bernice P. Bishop Museum
    Bulletin 48
    Published by the Museum
    Honolulu, Hawaii
    1928
This Bulletin was issued in wraps in 1928 by the Bishop Museum.  This particular copy was quite worn, thus it was just recent recased.  It is now in very nice, solid condition,  632 pages that includes CONTENTS, a DIAGRAM type MAP. no dust jacket issued, however the book has been fitted with a custom sized jacket of 5 ml. clear Mylar, an archival quality product.
An excellent job of binding has been accomplished with boards covered in new black buckram.
The end papers are new and flawless.  The original block displays considerable age toning, consistent to such a publication but no foxing spots.  The corners of the text are slightly rounded, evidence of handling, but the block is completely solid, no misaligned pages or significant tears. Of note, there is a ownership notation in the upper left corner of the Title Page and there are a few neatly penciled margin notations.  These are light and likely could be easily erased if not desired.  This book features pages printed on the recto side only so that there is no shadowing through from the printing of the opporsite page side.
As follows is a comprehensive study of life, the beliefs and practices of the Tahitians including indepth information on the island formations themselves, the plant and animal life, and geographic nature of the islands provided by Teuira Henry as recorded by J.M. Orsmond.
This publication, likely the most comprehensive to have been published was issued in 1928 and has not been reprinted. Very likely this was the Bishop Museum's first true printing as I note the page count differs from the standard 651 pages, having only 632 pages.  CONTENTS of this printing actually appear to be almost hand typed and lack both the 5 PREFACES and an INDEX, neither being noted in the CONTENTS or page count.
Being originally a large, heavy paperback publication, copies when available copies are generally in very delicate condition.  This copy, complete and  expertly rebound in hard covers would be ideal for anyone collecting or wishing to study ANCIENT TAHITI.   Priority Mail Delivery included Free, securely packed to prevent shipping damage.  International Priority Mail Delivery by the pound/kil to 180 countries worldwide. Flat Rate Boxes utilized for larger orders. GE tax applicable on sales to all residents of the State of Hawaii.
