    Description

This lot consists of nine Scribner's magazines from 1931, 1933, 1934, featuring works of major authors as they appeared in print for the first time.  The Public Library of Sierra Madre, California deaccessioned all of these, and they have some of the typical characteristics of ex-lib books, like stamping and a check-out card at the back.
    FAULKNER
    :
The earliest issue, from June of 1931, features William Faulkner's
    SPOTTED HORSES
.  The front wrap is ragged at the fore edge and has nearly detached.  From an earlier format, this copy measures only seven by ten inches, while all the other magazines in the lot measure 8-1/4" x 11".
The January, 1933 magazine offers Faulkner's
    THERE WAS A QUEEN
.  The text has detached from the wraps and spine.
The August, 1934 issue presents Faulkner's
    MULE IN THE YARD
; other than a small loss at the spinehead and a little lift to the paper at the spineheel, the magazine remains in good condition.
    FITZGERALD
    :
Parts II, III and IV of F. Scott Fitzgerald's
    TENDER IS THE NIGHT
appear in these February, March and April issues of 1934.  These examples would grade good if not for varying degrees of degradation at the spine.
    HEMINGWAY
    :
The March, 1933 magazine offers Ernest Hemingway's
    A CLEAN, WELL-LIGHTED PLACE
.  We note repair in the form of tape affixed to the entire length of the spine.
The April, 1933 issue contains the author's
    GIVE US a PRESCRIPTION, DOCTOR
, with both front and back wraps detached and with much of the spine missing.
Finally, the May, 1933 issue showcases
    HOMAGE TO SWITZERLAND
, missing the front wrap and spine entirely.
