"On 15 September 1959, José Humberto Gómez, a guide with Barbachano's Travel Service, discovered a sealed and hidden section of the long-known Grotto of Balankanche some 4 km. west of Chichen Itza. Opening the masonry that blocked the entrance to this part of the cave, Gómez found an extensive group of subterranean chambers rich with undisturbed archaeological remains...After spending an entire night in the cave, it was clear that we had one of the most striking archaeological finds of recent times."
