Fisher, Braden & Co., House Furnishers, Undertakers Cookbook
Third and Broadalbin Streets, Albany, Oregon
Not dated, but 1915.
"Our Mr. Samuel N. Braden has had much experience as a funeral director. He is master of detail and thoroughly understands every phase of the profession. He has proved himself sympathetically helpful in taking care of the bodies of the dead, and in the arrangement for the last sad rite., Our Motto: Sympathetic Service, Up-to-Date Methods, Reasonable Price."
Just take a look at the very unusual antique cookbook. This one was most likely offered as a promotional item by the local funeral parlor in Albany, Oregon. It has a hole punched through the top where there was probably a string tie. Many of these promotional cookbooks were tied to bags of flour, cooking utensils, and other home goods. One has to wonder what this little cookbook was tied to where it was offered by a funeral home. It includes so many tried and true recipes, and includes so many tips for the homemaker as well. It also includes a wonderful essay on "Albany in 1920" that describes a modern bustling city complete with street lamps and telephone service for all. At the end of the discussion, it appears that this was a five year projection thus dating the book's publication date to 1915.
A wonderful piece of Americana that should not be missed by those who collect antique cookbooks or mortuary items. Please Note: This seller does not reproduce this item by request or for future sales. This is to protect the interest of the high bidder, thank you.
