    Description

This is a rare copy of the original
    1914
    book, '
The Ukulele and How To Play It.
    'It features instructions by
    Major Kealakai,
an esteemed Hawaiian musician. The cover title is the longer,  '
Self-Instruction for the Ukulele and Taro-Patch Fiddle
    ' by
    Major Kealakai.
There is a cover photo of Major Kealakai with his Royal Hawaiian Glee Club.Their leis are tinted orange. In addition to the Glee Club, Major Kealakai was a conductor of
    The Royal Hawaiian Band.
He also played guitar, trombone and flute. As a youyh, he was plucked out of Reform School and taken under the wing of the Royal Hawaiian Band Conductor, Henri Berger. Many years later, once he established himself, he played widely. In the 1890s, he toured America. He never forgot his roots - returning to teach music at the Reformatory. This book is a treasure for collectors of
    vintage/antique Hawaii and Hawaiian music
. It's a companion to the vintage Hawaiian book we've listed on
    How to Hula.
Together, these books make a stupendous gift for birthdays and/or the holidays. Or, singly, the book with a Ukulele. What could be better than the Uke's original, authentic lessons! This softcover/wraps is seldom found, and, if located, perhaps in condition not near as good as this 66-page copy. The text and illustrations are clean, bright and unmarked. The only note is a shallow tear on the title page and the other side, featuring the photo of the Major (but doesn't affect the image). I've collected
    Hawaiiana
for many years - including scarce, antique books, silky shirts and original music, which landed in The Bishop Museum. I know this book is special, and I hope you think so, too. It will be sent, carefully packed, with tracking.
