By D. Darling. Rochester, Minn.: Clapp & Darling 1895. (9" x 13 3/4"; 400 pages.) The pages are blank, the book was NEVER USED.
The book has 16 pages devoted to Business Math with different mathematical methods for computing all sorts of things related to business, including computing interest, loss & gain, converting bushels into pounds to get prices for Corn, Clover, Oats, Wheat and Potatoes, and much more. There are sections on Patent Rights; Bills, Receipts and Orders; Contracts; Partnership; How to Deal with a Bank; Book-keeping; The Cash Book; How to Keep Accounts in a Small Business; Hints to Double-Entry Book-keepers; and Interest Tables.
There is a section on "Confidence Men" and how to avoid being conned by them.
4 pages are devoted on "How to Write a Business Letter"; there is a section on
Penmanship [very important in those days]
with examples of the fancy writing of that time and details on how to position the arm when writing, with the fore-arm firmly on the desk, and how the hand should move in order to practice those ornamental curly cues so popular then.
The book has "Special Instructions for Using the Account Book" on:
Personal Accounts; Cash Account; Bills Receivable and Bills Payable; Resources and Liabilities; General Expenses; Household Expenses; Milk Account; Butter Account; Poultry Account; and Produce. There are sections on Collections; Advertising; Box Marking; an alphabized list of Abbreviations [for words commonly used in business]; and Mercantile Terms. Lastly, there are 336 pages to be used for accounting purposes, which had not been used by anyone.
CONDITION: The pages of the book are in Excellent Condition, and tightly bound. The covers are in Very Good Condition, with sturdy thick boards, covered in what looks like heavy canvas material that has separated somewhat where the front cover meets the spine (at the top).
